RISE at Seattle Asian Art Museum

Lisa Ross, Visual artist from New York, in collaboration with China’s renowned Uyghur musician Perhat Khaliq (Paerhati Halike), traditional Uyghur dancer Mukaddas Mijit, and contemporary Indonesian-American choreographer Indah Walsh will come together for a residency at the Watermill Center in March 2016.  They will develop a live performance in dialogue with the video, RISE that Ross made after traveling to the Xinjiang region of China over the course of 10 years.  The video shows people waking up on rooftops and coming into consciousness at dawn, which literally and metaphorically is at the heart of this work.  These artists join to explore the interaction between traditional and contemporary forms of movement and sound as well as internal and external control over one’s body.

Pentacle Presents: Fall Further IV

IWDC will present Cheerleaders at a Wedding on October 4th at 7:00PM!

Cheerleaders at a Wedding was originally created in 2008 as a trio and has evolved into a piece for eleven women.  What began as a comical scene of “lost” Cheerleaders, this piece has developed into a hilarious extravaganza commenting on wedding culture and the hype associated with women being brides.

NYU Tisch Alumni Choreographic Mentorship Showing

FREE OF CHARGE

Mentored by Stephen Petronio, the Alumni Choreographic Mentorship is a workshop that takes place each year from January - May.  A selected group of alumni are chosen to participate in the workshop as a way to stay connected to their alma mater while creating new works.

On Sunday, May 10th, we're premiering the re-make of one of Indah's repertory pieces called "Cheerleaders at a Wedding" as a part of the Tisch Alumni Choreographic Workshop.  It was originally created as a trio back in '08/'09, and last summer we adapted it as a duet on Jessica Mantell and Kyleigh Sackandy to perform at showcases and an actual wedding!  This time, we have a cast of 11 amazing (and hilarious) women, and we've even extended the piece to an 11-12 minute work featuring music by Ray Charles, The Four Tops, James Brown, and Marvin Gaye.

A note from Indah:

I can't promise it will be a finished, perfected work, BUT I do think we're on to something hilarious.  Please come.  You won't regret it.

BEYOND SACRED: UNTHINKING MUSLIM IDENTITY

LaGuardia Performing Arts Center (LPAC) will present an interdisciplinary artistic and academic program entitled Beyond Sacred: Unthinking Muslim Identity for the entirety of its’ 2014-15 season.

Beyond Sacred’s goal is to create a cohesive cultural program that illuminates life experiences of culturally identified Muslims in 21st century, post 9/11 New York City, and results in greater understanding among Muslim and non-Muslim communities in NYC.

With a hope to change minds – effect behaviors – and alter attitudes we use the art of storytelling through music, dance, and theatre to bring individual stories to life that challenge assumptions of group identity.

The Leap of Faith Concert will consist of two new dance works commissioned by LPAC.  Indah Walsh Dance Company will premier a new work exploring Indah’s background as a global nomad and her recent, thought-provoking trip to Saudi Arabia.  By working with women and reflecting on Muslim cultures, religious laws, gender roles, and the purity in seeking connection with God or Allah,  we aim to create something that is, in itself, a spiritual practice.

Collaborating dance artists: Jessica Mantell, Molly McSherry, Shantel Prado, Ho-Ju Wu, Kyleigh Sackandy, Julie Seal, and Lorena Delgado

Live music: Nolufefe Mtshabe

Costume Desgin: Sarita Fellows
